One-third of the world's crops depend on bees and pollination.
In the last few decades we have witnessed an alarming decrease of bees.
Over time, if this continues, our favorite natural and unprocessed food will become less available.
Also it will lead to high prices of many plants, vegetables and fruits that we eat on daily basis.
Unfortunately, the bees’ extinction is continuing, despite all attempts to stop it.
Causes of High Bee Mortality Rate
Fifty years ago the world was completely different.
Bees were provided with more flowers and there were less pests or illnesses threating their nutritional chain.
These days, industrialization took its course against nature and our bees are unable to find good pollen and nectar.
Herbicides and insecticides are increasingly being used by farmers.
This has led to the phenomenon known as colony collapse disorder or CCD disorder.
Colony collapse disorder (CCD) is the condition that occurs when the bees become so disoriented and intoxicated that they no longer know how to find the way to their hive or they die of poisoning after returning to hive.
We need good, clean food and so do the pollinators. If bees don’t have enough food, then so wont we.
Bees extinction sends a clear message that bees cannot survive in agricultural and urban conditions we have created. - said Marla Spivak, an entomologist and a professor at the Minnesota University.
Foods That Won’t be Available Without Bees
Although bees are not required for pollination of all plants, because some of them have the ability of self-pollination or they rely on wind, still there are many plants that bear the risk of disappearing from our tables.
Ingredients that might disappear:
- apple
- mango
- kiwi
- peach
- berries
- all types of onion
- pear
- alfalfa
- Indian nut
- avocado
- passion fruit
- beans
- vegetables from the genus Cruciferae (cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli...)
- cocoa and coffee
- plants of genus Gossypium (cotton)
- lemons and limes
- carrots
- cucumber
- melon
- watermelon
- coconut
- sugar beet
- rape
- paprika, red paprika, green paprika, chili peppers
- papaya
- eggplant
- vanilla
- tomatoes
- grapes
- many seeds and nuts
Therefore a significant decrease of bee population or their complete extinction would lead to total disappearance of all the listed ingredients.
If you want a healthy body and a healthy future, if you want your kitchen to be colorful and interesting, then something has to be done urgently before it is too late.
What can be done?
- Plant plants in your gardens, courtyards and community gardens that attract bees
- Limit the use of pesticides and us organic alternatives
- Buy the local, organically produced ingredients and honey, and support farmers and beekeepers in your region
- Donate and support various non-profit organizations that are working to protect, enhance and strengthen bee population
