Periodontal disease (Periodontitis) is a chronic infection that affects the gums and bone that support the teeth, which can lead to tooth loss.

The cause of periodontal disease are millions of bacteria that live in our mouths and multiply due to improper diet or poor oral hygiene.

Statistics show that between 30% and 40% of people suffer from this disease.

Periodontal disease  is one of the most common causes of tooth loss in adults.

Unfortunately, periodontal disease is a wily disease that often starts with mild symptoms, so most people do not know they have it until it is too late.

Watch out for these symptoms:

  • tender, swollen or inflamed gums
  • gums are bright red or purple
  • halitosis
  • frequent bleeding from the gums
  • strange taste in mouth
  • pus between the teeth
  • spacing between teeth or loose teeth
  • pain in the teeth and gums

Treatment of periodontal disease

Conventional methods of treating periodontal disease in most cases are painful and torturous, including frequent visits to the dentist. Sometimes even that does not ensure the desired result.

Fortunately, there are natural ways of treating this disease, which can be self-administered at home.

Olive oil

Folk recipe which includes a daily mouthwash with olive oil is really effective in the treatment of periodontal disease.

Olive oil nourishes the gums and teeth, prevents the growth of bacteria, and in addition relieves pain and inflammation.

Every morning gurgle a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes and then spit it out.

Essential oils

Many essential oils have antibacterial properties. You can use them to prevent or stop  periodontal disease.

Essential oils can be rubbed on the gums (be sure to dilute it 1:1 with almond or olive oil). They can be diluted with water and regularly used for mouth rinsing.

If you want to use essential oils, consult an experienced aromatherapist.

Oils that help against periodontal disease are:

  • tea tree oil
  • neem oil
  • peppermint oil
  • oregano oil
  • clove oil
  • neem oil (vegetable oil)

You can also find toothpastes with essential oils and healing herbs. Regular application of such toothpaste can cure periodontal disease.

Vitamin C

The association between vitamin C deficiency and gum disease is well-known. In the 18th century, sailors ate limes during long journeys in order to prevent bleeding gums.

A study published in the Journal of Periodontology suggests that people who are deficient in vitamin C have a higher risk of developing periodontal disease.

Vitamin C in addition to preventing the growth of bacteria helps rapid regeneration of connective tissue and bone.

Eat foods rich in vitamin C such as oranges, kiwi, mango, grapefruit, strawberries, red peppers, and broccoli. You can intake vitamin C in the form of supplements.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties and may reduce susceptibility to a periodontal disease. Analysis of 6700 patients showed that people with higher amounts of vitamin D in the body have a much smaller percentage of periodontal disease.

In order to get enough vitamin D, you simply need to expose yourself to sunlight regularly.

Coenzyme Q10

There is a research linking gum disease with coenzyme Q10 deficiency in the body.

Coenzyme Q10 is a natural antioxidant, which is produced in our body. Coenzyme is responsible for many biochemical processes.

Unfortunately, over the years the production of coenzyme in the body decreases. Its deficiency is associated with many diseases such as allergies, asthma, heart disease, etc.

Researchers at Osaka University of Japan have shown a significant improvement in patients with periodontal disease who were using toothpaste with coenzyme Q10 during three weeks.

Additional amounts of coenzyme Q10 can be introduced via food or in the form of dietary supplements.

Propolis

The good old propolis we often forget about helps with a large number of diseases, and is good for periodontal disease.

Propolis is a natural antibiotic, which protects the body against viruses and bacteria. Regularly rinsing your mouth with propolis will cure periodontal disease.

Mix 15 drops of propolis in half a glass of water several times a day and rinse your mouth with this mixture.

In pharmacies, you can buy propolis throat spray, which can be used as a mouth spray.

Regular oral hygiene

The cause of periodontal disease is a bacteria which multiply in dental plaque and then attack the gums and bones beneath them. The breeding ground for the bacteria are food remains in our mouth after a meal.

Regular oral hygiene can prevent diseases of the teeth and oral cavity. Brush your teeth several times a day. In particular, we recommend herbal toothpaste without fluoride.

Avoiding stress

Recent research has linked stress to periodontal disease. Students who participated in the research had increased periodontal disease after they were exposed to stress during the exams.

A lot of times we have written about stress - the scourge of the modern age. Stress can completely destroy the immune system and give the "green light" to many diseases. Avoid it!

If you have  periodontal disease, do not despair. These natural methods, painless and inexpensive, will help you get rid of this disease.

This is really great information! I've never been sure of what to watch out for when it comes to determining if I have gum disease. It's good to keep an eye if my gums are bleeding a lot, or if there's a constant unpleasant taste in my mouth. I'm glad that you included at home treatments for gum disease in case I have it. It's interesting that olive oil can nourish the gums and teeth. Now I can see why my mother used to supplement with olive oil so much when I was younger. I should start supplementing my diet with extra virgin olive oil and use it to oil pull. http://www.cosmeticdentistryedmonton.com/cosmetic-dentistry
