Meteoropathy refers to various symptoms and reactions in our body because of the weather changes.
Weather factors that affect our body include temperature, UV rays, humidity, wind, air pressure, rain, thunder and ionization effect.
Most affected are people in their middle ages, especially women, but anyone can be affected – from babies to older persons.
How some persons are affected by this condition can be seen in Mediterranean countries where the effect of cyclonal “jugo”, the most frequent variation of south wind in the Adriatic Sea, is considered as mitigating circumstance in criminal proceedings.
The Republic of Dubrovnik prohibited enacting laws during “jugo”.
Most Common Meteoropathic Difficulties
Meteoropathy can be especially dangerous for people with serious health problems because it can deteriorate their health or even lead to death.
Meteoropathy symptoms occur 24-48 hours before weather change especially in sensitive people and include:
- Depression
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Physical weakness
- Hypertension
- Increased sensitivity to pain in joints and muscles
- Worsening the symptoms of existing diseases
- Mood changes
- Tension
- Increased heart beat
This condition lasts for day or two and then the body stabilizes. Symptoms are the same despite the age of a person.
2 primary types of meteoropathy:
-
Primary or basic meteoropathy affects healthy people and occurs as mood changes, body weakness or pain during weather change.
- Secondary meteoropathy occurs when existing illness is being deteriorated (high blood pressure, heart and lung diseases, inflammatory and degenerative disease of muscular-skeletal-joints system) due to weather changes.
Causes of Meteoropathy
Weather changes are caused by electromagnetic waves that affect hypothalamus in the brain. They indirectly increase the excretion of stress hormones, at the same time decreasing the hormone of happiness, endorphin, which leads to increased anxiety, irritation, headache and similar symptoms.
Decline of atmospheric pressure narrows blood vessels which causes high blood pressure, while decrease of atmospheric pressure spreads the blood vessels and causes low blood pressure.
Similar change occurs in bones and joints and causes increased pain.
It is also considered that one of the causes of meteoropathy is human alienation from nature. This is why people today are not as well adjusted to weather changes as before.
