Although the scientists have not yet fully discovered why and how this plant is so effective, everyone agrees that it offers a wide range of beneficial effects on human health.


Stress - the key health issues of today


Stress occurs whenever external stimuli disrupt the biological and physiological balance of the body.

The pressure on our physical, mental and emotional circuit is varied - from an unhealthy diet, toxic substances and the environment to daily exposure to noise, lack of sleep or acute life stresses.

Such chronic stress is unnatural, because it is constantly present and undermines our ability to maintain our health.

This is corroborated by the fact that more than 70% of health problems, illnesses and absenteeism (sick leaves) are associated with the long-term exposure to stress.

Therefore, the struggle to reduce the stress level has become a key part of health strategy today.


Types of stress and its impact on health


Momentary stress

Irritation of the sympathetic nervous system (high-speed driving, rapid descent down the river etc).

The brain sends a message to the adrenal glands, causing a secretion of chemical messengers i.e. hormones epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline).

They prepare the body to the challenge that is in front of it by causing accelerated circulation, stimulating muscles, expanding pupils, increasing blood pressure etc.

What is important about momentary stress is that the body very quickly establishes a balance after a stressful event.


Long-term stress (constant, prolonged stress)

With long-term stress, the body loses its ability to balance; there is a secretion of other types of pituitary hormones that cause the release of steroid hormones, particularly cortisol.

There is a whole range of changes with direct and indirect adverse effects on the immune, physiological, endocrine, and other systems.

We begin to feel tired, depressed, anxious, and eventually develop a number of disorders and diseases.


Stress reduction - multiple benefits

  • Heart patients and elderly

Stress reduction is beneficial in cases of heart failure, arrhythmias, and high and low blood pressure, partly thanks to the ability of the active ingredients of Rhodiola rosea to reduce the levels of inflammatory substances (CRP) and reduce muscle damage.

  • Overwork and chronic fatigue

Rhodiola is proven to be useful in case of irregular and effusive menstrual cycles, depression, tendency to colds and infections, insomnia, sexual problems, headaches, muscle pain (an excellent complement to Klorofil or MagneZi B6), followed by chronic fatigue, high blood pressure, irritability etc.

  •  Problems with insomnia

Insomnia is strongly associated with stress and mood disorders. Approximately 40-60% of people reported some form of sleep disorder.

This ultimately leads to metabolic and endocrine disorders, impairs quality of life, work ability and immunity, increases the number of accidents, and contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure and obesity (University of Chicago, Dr. Van Cauter).

  •  Immune system protection

Scientists have estimated that the leukocytes (white blood cells responsible for active immunity) in people with high levels of stress are as much as 9-17 years older than those in the control group.

Due to the activation of stress hormones and higher levels of oxidative damage, a weakening of the immune system and aging occur.

  • Energy, sports performance and learning

By measuring the mental abilities of people taking Rhodiola rosea preparations it has been found that it increases performance, both mental and physical, delays fatigue, and significantly reduces the level of exhaustion.

The Russian Academy of Natural Sciences published findings that Rhodiola rosea helps enhance the body's capacity by increasing the content of chemical energy (mitochondrial ATP) within the cells of skeletal muscle.

This coincides with results of similar studies in which it was observed that taking 200 mg pf Rhodiola rosea extracts increased physical endurance and performance. Rhodiola rosea helps with faster and easier learning and acquisition of knowledge.

Researchers at the Volgograd Medical University investigated the effect of Rhodiola rosea on the ability to learn foreign languages through observation of basic intellectual skills, conversational skills and final success.

Students who used Rhodiola rosea preparation improved the learning ability by as much as 60%, while decreasing the level of fatigue by 30% compared to the control group of students.

  • Vitality

Prolonged stress is known to accelerate the aging of cells. An article from the U.S. National Academy of Sciences stated that a group of women who had long been in a state of anxiety showed a significantly higher degree of cellular aging than the control group.

Taking Rhodiola rosea preparations decreases the secretion of harmful stress hormones and actively reduces the level of cellular changes that lead to aging and degenerative processes.

Several significant studies have been performed regarding the anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic properties of Rhodiola rosea.
