Acupressure (lat. acus – a needle and pressura - pressure) is the healing art of pressing certain points and places on the body.
In principle it is similar to acupuncture and it is based on the concept of life energy that flows through body meridians.
During the treatment physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in body meridians.
Pressure may be applied by hand, elbow or various instruments.
Acupuncture points used in treatment may or may not be in the same body area as targeted symptom.
Acupressure - Ancient Technique of Deep Massage
According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine there are certain acupuncture points through which the whole system of body meridians is being stimulated.
That is how yin, yang and qi (chi) are balanced, and the result is the alleviation of problems.
Knowledge on acupressure comes from ancient Indian scriptures. Later on it was improved in China and popularized around the world.
It is no coincidence that women in India wear luxurious jewelry precisely on the most important acupuncture points.
This proves that this system of deep massage was well known to people in India for centuries.
The main principle of acupressure is that every organ in the human body is directly linked to specific points situated on palm and foot of the body.
Energy transfer between these points and organs is reciprocal.
There are two main types of acupressure:
-
Permanent pressure: the point is being continuously stimulated so the pressure can be slowly increased. There is a 4 to 5 minutes break, then the process is repeated several times.
- Periodical pressure: the point is being stimulated for about 20 seconds, in regular intervals of 10 seconds. This method can be applied for 4 to 5 minutes and then repeated after 10 minutes.
Acupressure is usually done with the tip of the thumb.
It should be carried out for 20 minutes a day in order to achieve good results.
Persons that have external or internal injuries, or are suffering from some skin disease affecting their palm, persons who have a thrombosis risk or have an implanted peacemaker, should be careful when applying acupressure.
Finger Massage - Fast and Efficient Self-remedy for Headache
Since acupressure points that correspond with the head are situated on the fingers, by massaging them you can remove various types of headache.
Instructions:
- Place your thumb on the tip of a finger of the other hand.
- Massage the finger with your thumb (using the strength of the whole fist) making wriggle motions (left-right) from the tip of your finger to the root (palm of the hand).
- Treat the entire surface of the skin, millimeter by millimeter. Do not lift your thumb from the finger you are massaging.
- Massage in intervals of few seconds to several minutes, depending on your current needs and available time.
- Treat all fingers of both left and right hand in the same manner. If needed, repeat the acupressure several times a day
- For a quick relief from headache connect all your fingers from both hands and rub them together strongly for about two minutes.
- If you are suffering from headache due to poor circulation in the neck area, pay special attention to the root of the thumb and massage the bottom of the thumb in circular motions.
- If you are suffering from shoulder pain, focus your massage on the palm area right below the little finger and on the side of the palm.
As body exercise helps you maintain your health, the method of acupressure is efficient as well.
15 to 20 minutes of acupressure massage a day will help you ease most common health problems and improve your vitality.
