Fatigue, depression, putting on weight, feeling cold, goiter, poor hair quality...
These and many other symptoms have been linked with thyroid disease, which is the second most frequent disease of the endocrine system in the world after diabetes.
According to the World Health Organization, no less than 2 billion people struggle with problems linked to the improper functioning of this small gland.
Every year as many as 500 new cases are diagnosed in Croatia alone, women being more frequently affected than men.
Symptoms that are frequently attributed to the menopause or a chronic illness may in fact be signs of an abnormal thyroid function, whether hyperthyroidism (excessive hormonal secretion) or hypothyroidism (insufficient hormonal secretion).
One of the causes is the lack of iodine in the organism, followed by stress, lifestyle, genes, etc.
There may be other factors, which you should take into account.
Is there a solution for this serious problem and how to address it property?
Food as a natural remedy for the thyroid
Yes, a part of the solution for thyroid problems lies in the nutrition.
In my books (Nutrition of the 21th century series) I always advocate only one nutrition style, which I consider to be the healthiest, and it is the Mediterranean diet.
Specifically, the one that includes low glycemic index and low glycemic load foods.
The Mediterranean diet is a solution for the thyroid too. You can help your thyroid to become stronger in only two months.
The elimination program I have created includes a plan for selecting right foods and dietary supplements and for eliminating the foods that hinder the functioning of the thyroid.
This is a vegetarian approach, which has been proven as quality eating style for a healthy thyroid in an ever increasing number of researches.
A recent research at Loma University (USA) suggests that the vegetarian style can in fact play a protective role for the thyroid health.
By eliminating red meat (especially veal and pork) one reduces the risk of having high blood levels of C reactive protein (CRP), the study has shown.
A high level of that protein is in a direct correlation with inflammatory processes in the body. It is precisely the problems related to the thyroid function that involve inflammation.
This is why, during the two months of reprogramming your thyroid, it is necessary to eliminate not just meat but all the foods that induce and maintain the inflammation in the body.
Good and bad foods
For starters, you must kick out all the foods that contain gluten and introduce non-gluten variants of pasta and bread.
It is recommended to avoid the foods containing thiouracil and all goitrogenic foods, since they affect the hormonal level in the body, disturbing the thyroid function.
This includes foods from the cruciferous family (broccoli, Brussels sprouts...), soy and soy products plus all the foods containing refined sugar.
Foods to avoid:
- Soy and all soy products
- Gluten
- Peanuts
- Pine nuts
- Millet
- Strawberries
- Peaches
- Batat
- Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts
- Cabbage, kale
- Raddish
- Parsnip
Use healthy and beneficial fats, nuts, legumes, fruit and vegetables.
The ideal choice is seafood, rich in iodine and other nutrients, which must find their way to your menu for a healthier thyroid.
You may choose between kelp, kombu, hiijiki, nori, wakame an many others, which are a real treasure trove of health.
Introduce the nutritious cranberry juice with iodine (you may find the recipe in the e-book), which will be a true elixir for your thyroid, every morning before breakfast.
You may find an example of a one-day menu for thyroid health in this article.
Dietary supplements
You can help your nutrition with quality dietary supplements in form of vitamins and minerals.
But not all supplements are good for thyroid, and some interact with synthetic drugs which you may be taking as a prescribed therapy.
Therefore it is essential to know which vitamins and minerals are essential, and which require a special caution.
The recommended supplements are: iodine, B group vitamins, zinc, selenium and L-tyrosine rich food.
My e-book features a list of dietary supplements not recommended for those who take medications and indicates the foods and drinks (coffee and the like) you must be careful with if you're on a synthetic therapy.
Workout for a healthier thyroid
If you don't get moving, neither will your thyroid.
Exercising is an important factor in the care for overall health, but it is essential when it comes to your thyroid.
If you have a thyroid disorder, you should know that you should not resort to exhausting workouts requiring you to exceed the limits of your indurance.
No, with thyroid it is necessary to exercise at most up to 70% of your capacity.
Everything beyond that, an excessive effort, would expose your body to exhaustion and put further pressure on your already weak thyroid.
For your body, it would be an additional shock leaving you in a vicious circle of putting on weight, fatigue, poor digestion and a bad skin and hair.
So start with light exercising, walking, aerobics, bike riding, and then increase your endurance and strength.
Be persistent and you'll notice the results fairly quickly.
