
Sour taste arises from the combination of the elements of air and earth, and it is by its very nature it is dry, cold and light.
Sour taste is the least present taste in our diet.
You can find it in:
- legumes (beans, lentils)
- fruit (pears, pomegranates, dried fruits, cranberries, khaki apples khaki)
- vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, artichokes, asparagus and beets)
- cereals (buckwheat, rye, quinoa)
- spices (turmeric, oregano)
- coffee and tea
Sour taste increases Vata and decreases Pita and Kapha doshas. By its nature, sour taste is dry and therefore absorbs body fluids.
The healing properties of sour taste:
- helps to stop diarrhea, sweating and bleeding
- causes constriction of blood vessels and blood coagulation
- has anti-inflammatory properties
- helps heal wounds and injuries
- has soothing properties
- purifies the blood
We know that a balanced diet should contain all 6 flavors. We need sour taste and we should gradually add it into our diet.
However, Ayurveda says that it is good to consume everything in moderation. Too much of sour taste can cause harm to our health.
Excess sour taste can cause the following problems:
- premature aging
- weakness
- constipation and bloating
- problems with the heart
- blood clots
- Vata dosha disorder
- paralysis and convulsions
