Falafel – fried chickpea balls - is an Egyptian dish that is becoming increasingly popular around the world as a quick, tasty and healthy meal.
Falafel balls can be served with cooked vegetables, salad or a light sauce, or eaten as a separate dish, like a snack.
Ingredients:
- 400 g chickpeas, soaked overnight
- Bread crumbs
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 4 tablespoons of flour
- ½ onion
- 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds
- Oil or ghee for frying
- Salt and pepper
Sauce:
- 50 ml of cream (or soya cream)
- 1 tablespoon of tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon of milled sweet paprika
- 5 cloves of garlic
- Salt and sugar
Preparation:
Soak chickpeas overnight. Next day grind it in blender along with the onions, then add the flour, salt, sesame seeds, pepper and baking powder. If is too watery, add some bread crumbs. Shape the small balls (smaller than apricot) and fry in deep oil for about 2-3 minutes until they become dark brown.
Sauce:
Place the cream, garlic, sweet pepper, tomato paste and a little bit of salt and sugar, and mix it in a pot. Boil for a short time.
