Many of you have at least once picked this flower and tore its petals one by one saying: "He/she loves me, he/she loves me not ..."
You can immediately guess we are talking about a daisy, (latin name Bellis Perennis L), also known as common daisy, lawn daisy or English daisy.
This lovely little flower grows everywhere and its season is just beginning.
But no matter how small – it has magnificent healing properties.
Daisy has always been present in folk medicine for its properties of cleansing the body, treatment of exhaustion and blood diseases.
In Norse mythology, it is dedicated to Ostara, the goddess of spring.
According to Christian tradition, these flowers sprung from the tears of Mary, which she shed on her voyage to Egypt.
Healing properties of daisy juice
Daisy is ideal for spring body detoxification as it removes toxins from the body. For this purpose, it is best to drink its juice.
The juice should be freshly prepared. Every day, drink one to three full tablespoons of juice mixed with half quantity of water.
Mixed with honey, the juice is a home remedy for respiratory organ diseases.
It’s also a great remedy for inflamed wounds, skin problems, burns, edema, and varicose veins.
In therapeutic purposes, it shall be placed on the affected places.
For healthy lungs, stomache and joints
Daisy tea is used in the treatment of bronchitis and chest pain, bowel and stomach inflammation, as well as liver and kidney diseases.
It also helps with irregular menstruation, pain and spasms, rheumatism, gout and arthritis. It can be combined with walnut leaves for treating internal bleeding.
Scientists also confirm that daisy is a valuable natural remedy. It is recommended in a form of tea or fresh juice as a natural help for HIV and breast cancer.
Daisy ointment is a good remedy for wounds and inflamed joints. Daisy tincture relieves rheumatism and muscle fatigue.
Beautifies and purifies the skin
Daisy contains saponins, polyphenols, flavonoids, polysaccharides and inulin.
Because of these active ingredients, daisy is widely used in cosmetics.
It is an increasingly common ingredient in many cosmetic products, especially those for skin whitening, removing freckles and hyperpigmentation.
This plant restrains melanin formation and evens out skin color caused by pigmentation disorders. It also regenerates skin cells, whitens melanin in the epidermis and deeply hydrates the skin.
In specialty stores, you can buy the daisy extract and essential oils. You can find cosmetics with daisy as a main ingredient in most drugstores.
Daisy remedies
Daisy tea
Pour a cup of boiled water over one or two tablespoons of dried flowers. Leave it for 10 minutes, then strain the tea.
Daisy tincture
Soak two or three handfuls of cut daisies in a liter of alkohol and leave it for three weeks. Occasionally shake the tincture. Filtrate the mixture after three weeks and use it.
Mature and tired skin care tonic
Pour 250 ml of boiling water over a teaspoon of dried daisy flower heads and let it stand for 30 minutes.
Joint ointment
Mash daisy leaves and add half the amount of mallow leaves. Fry the mixture in clarified butter (ghee). Strain hot mixture through a cloth directly into a pot/bottle where you plan to store the ointment. Rub the mixture on sore joints 2 to 3 times a day.
Daisy as a food
Daisy leaves are rich in vitamins C and A. They can be eaten as a salad, added to stews, soups and vegetable dishes.
It is especially delicious mixed with cotton cheese. Germans consider daisy leaf salad equally delicious as cornsalad.
Hard and green buds can be marinated in vinegar and used instead of capers.
Flower heads are also edible. They are most often used for decoration of desserts, and they can also be candied.
Pickled daisy buds
Heat vinegar and salt. Place the buds in a wide sterilized jar and pour hot mixture of vinegar and salt over them. Cover the mixture and let it stand for a week. Stir every day.
Move the mixture into a clean glass jar, pour a mixture of vinegar over it, close the jar tightly and let it age for two weeks in the refrigerator. After that period it is ready for consummation.
