The truth about the “healthy” dishes with a ceramic coating

Ceramic "eco" pans are more dangerous than Teflon pans

Have you, after reading about the harmfulness of Teflon, decided to throw Teflon cookware out of your kitchen?

Are you looking for new, healthier and safer dishes?

Have you perhaps considered those beautiful white pots and pans with a "revolutionary" ceramic coating?

Although it is written that these products are "green", "eco" and "healthy", these pans are perhaps more dangerous than Teflon.

Why Teflon cookware should not be in your kitchen

If you have not read about the harmful effects of Teflon, we will briefly state the reasons why you should avoid it:

  • Contrary to what advertising says, Teflon does not tolerate temperatures at which food is prepared.

  • Teflon pans, when heated at a temperature of 240-350 ° C, start to decompose and release toxic Teflon fumes.

  • At these temperatures, large amounts of fluorinated acid, tetrafluoroethylene and hexsafluoropropane and tiny nanoparticles of Teflon are released.

  • At even higher temperatures (which can be achieved by leaving an empty pan on the fire for just 3 minutes), more harmful toxins and perfluorizobuten carbonyl fluoride are released.

  • Tetrafluoroethylene, perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluoroisobutene are carcinogens and are ten times more toxic than conventional chemical agent phosgene and monofluoracetic acid that can cause death in low concentrations.

  • Teflon is a product of the polymer industry, which was used in the production of nuclear bombs during World War II.

  • PFC compounds contained in Teflon are poisonous and biologically non-degradable and eventually accumulate in the environment.

  • PFC disrupt hormonal balance in the body, it can cause many types of cancer, damage to the immune system and can prevent the normal development of the fetus.

The smart choice is to remove all Teflon cookware from your kitchen.  But with what to replace it? Which cookware is healthy, and which is not? And with what to replace pancake pan?!

Today, in supermarkets we can see white and colored pans and cookware sets with ceramic non-stick coating. They look very attractive and seem like a healthy alternative to Teflon cookware.

Unfortunately, although they say that they are environmentally friendly and healthy, this is far from the truth.

Why are pans with ceramic coating a poor substitute for Teflon

Frying pans with ceramic non-stick coating have emerged recently on the market.

Their production is possible thanks to advances in technology.

This is a "breakthrough" coating consisting of ceramic nanoparticles, which are glued to the pan with the help of a special adhesive.

First thing that concerns us is the use of adhesives.

We asked the producer how this adhesive behaves at high temperatures, scratches, and what amount of adhesive is released into the food. We never got the answer.

But what is really worrying is the use of nanoparticles.

The problem is that nanotechnology is a completely new branch of science. Nanoproducts entered the market without additional research and monitoring.

It is not entirely clear how nanoparticles affect our health and the environment.

We started to use the washing machine, antibacterial socks and cosmetics with nanosilver.

After that, we realized that silver nanoparticles are entering the environment and altering the natural balance of microorganisms in nature. That is why many products with nanosilver are being removed from the market.

Manufacturers of nanocheramic pans should answer the following questions: How many nanoparticles are released into the air? How many of them do we ingest via the food we cook? How they behave in our bodies?

Unfortunately, the answer to these questions will not come soon because the technology for measuring nanoparticles emission does not yet exist!

Results of research on the effect of nanoparticles on the human body and environment are concerning. It was found that nanoparticles behave in a very aggressive manner.

“It appears that the nanoparticles are more dangerous and toxic than other materials because of their small size and increased reactivity.” (ETC Group)

Nanoparticles quickly enter our body. They are small and move fast, which is why our immune system does not recognize them:

  •     particle of 70 nanometers in size are stored deep in our lungs,
  •     particle of 50 nanometers in size freely enter our cells,
  •     particle of 30 nanometers in size cross the blood-brain barrier and enter the brain.

Does that sound harmless to you?

A healthy alternative to Teflon and nanoceramic pans

The question remains: what to replace Teflon cookware with?

Stainless steel cookware, quality enameled cookware, glass, clay and ceramic (not nanoceramic!) are great and healthy cookware for cooking.

When it comes to making pancakes and other sticky foods, the best results were achieved by a cast iron frying pan, which distributes heat evenly and allow you to prepare food without sticking.

These pans get heated slightly more and are relatively heavy, but they are healthy and very easy to wash.

Our recommendations are the pans made of cast iron with enamel glaze made by Le Crueset that have shown excellent results in baking.

This cookware has a long tradition and many professional cooks deservedly consider it to be the best, healthiest and most reliable cookware.
