Our liver is a very special organ - even when it is more than 50%, damaged it can be fully restored.
The mechanism of liver regeneration is still not entirely clear.
But one thing is clear - that ability is crucial for our health.
The liver is the most important metabolic organ in the body.
Among other tasks, it has the role of purifying the blood of toxins and poisons.
Today's world is different from the world in which we once lived. Even a hundred years ago, all foreign matter came into contact with came from the plant world.
In our modern era, we have created thousands of new chemical compounds that would not otherwise exist in nature.
Many chemical compounds are part of our diet (preservatives, flavors, colors). We also consume many other compounds in drugs, which many of us use every day.
Chemicals are used in cosmetics, detergents, printing materials, textile industry etc.
All these chemicals pass through our liver every day, which has to deal with this burden. In most cases, our liver manages to cleanse the blood of these toxins.
However, there are situations when the liver is overloaded and really need her help, for example:
- liver diseases
- poisoning
- excessive medication intake
- excessive use of alcohol
-
unbalanced diet over a long time
People have always known and used plants that protect and regenerate the liver.
Herbs for liver regeneration
1. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum)
By far the best results in the prevention and treatment of liver damage were shown by milk thistle. The main active ingredient in milk thistle is silymarin.
Silymarin is a complex of different compounds (silybin A and B, iso-silybin, silikristin, silidianin, flavonoids like kvercetol and taxifolin etc). Together, they are involved in liver regeneration and its protection.
Studies were conducted with Amanita phalloides, one of the most poisonous mushrooms, which causes dangerous liver damage and kills about 30% of its victims.
During the study silymarin was given a) before consuming these mushrooms and b) 10 minutes after eating mushrooms. In both groups milk thistle has provided 100% effective protection against the toxic effects of Amanita phalloides.
Silymarin is a potent antioxidant (10 times stronger than vitamin E). Silymarin increases levels of glutathione in the liver by 35%.
Glutathione is responsible for cleaning the liver of a wide range of toxins. With the increasing levels of glutathione, the liver has a greater power to cleanse the blood of toxic compounds.
In this way, consumption of milk thistle has both the protective and regenerating effect on our liver.
Dosage:
- 70-240 mg of milk thistle three times a day (dosage depends on the strength of a single product on the market)
- 140 mg of silymarin three times a day
Note:
Our body can become used to silymarin. Therefore, take it for 2 weeks and then take a two-week break. After that you can again resume with the treatment..
2. Dandelion
Eat dandelion! This plant grows in every garden. Pick dandelion leafs, wash them and add them to salads.
Dandelion can be found in health food stores in the form of a tincture or capsules.
Dandelion is incredibly useful when it comes to the health of the liver and other organs associated with it.
This herb has been used successfully in the treatment of many liver diseases - hepatitis, liver inflammation, liver stones, liver failure, jaundice, etc.
Dandelion has a tonic effect on the liver and helps its function.
Dosage:
- 4-8 ml of fresh dandelion root juice (1-2 teaspoons) once a day
- 2-8 mg of dried dandelion root once a day, in tea
- 4-8 ml of dandelion extract once a day (diluted in water or tea)
3. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra)
The Chinese have long used this plant for treating liver problems.
Research Group of Liver Disease and Shanxi Medical College conducted a study which confirmed that licorice neutralizes toxins in liver.
Studies also confirm that licorice increases the production of interferon, which is commonly used for treating hepatitis B.
Since 1950 doctors in both East and West successfully use glycyrrhizin in the treatment of hepatitis - a compound derived from licorice.
In Japan, glycyrrhizin has proved so effective in the treatment of hepatitis that it has become a standard part of therapy for this disease.
Dosage
7-8 grams of licorice root every day
There are other ways of restoring liver.
