Many fats are healthy – check which ones!
Contrary to common belief, not all fats we introduce into our organism are harmful for our health.
Actually, many fats help maintain appropriate body weight and ensure the regular functioning of cardiovascular and nervous systems.
But, with all this misinformation regarding harmful effects of oils and fats, it is hard to believe opposite and many people, at the expense of their own health, avoid fats.
In order to clear such doubts, here follow several information about oils that have beneficial effects on our health.
Coconut oil – one of the healthiest ones
Coconut oil is multiply useful food item and the richest source of middle chain of fatty acids (MCFA).
These fats regulate digestion, help fat assimilation and ensure energy to our organism.
Coconut oil is rich in healthy saturated fats and antioxidants. They enhance brain functions, strengthen the immunity and allow regular thyroid gland functions.
Since coconut oil has a high smoking point, it is very stable. Due to that, it is great for cooking and for consumption in raw form.
Many people consume a spoon of unrefined extra virgin coconut oil every day because of its key ingredient – lauric acid which has strong anti-fungal, anti-viral and anti-bacterial effects.
Since it quickly penetrates into the cells, coconut oil accelerates digestion and is simultaneously a great source of energy.
Palm oil – rich source of vitamins A and E
There are numerous discussions regarding the production of this oil because of the fear that palm plants will endanger natural habitats of orangutans and other wild animals.
That problem requires a responsible approach, but nevertheless, palm oil is high quality, stabile oil rich in natural vitamin E and carotene (vitamin A).
As coconut oil, it has a high smoking point, it does not need hydogenization in order to stay stable which makes this oil devoid of trans-fatty acids. That makes this oil perfect for the preparation of cooked and fried dishes.
Palm oil is the only oil with the perfect ratio of tocopherol and tocotrienol (two forms of vitamin E). Furthermore, in palm oil we find 13 times more carotene (A vitamin) than in carrot, which makes this oil one of the best sources of that important nutrient.
Avocado oil – a powerful antioxidant
Almost unknown oil in Croatia, avocado oil is gaining significance as oil used for fighting free radicals since it protects cells from damages.
It is rich in phytonutrients and it rarely oxidizes. That gives avocado oil greater quality when compared to oils made of sunflowers, rapeseed, soy, corn and peanut which are often recommended as the healthy ones.
Antioxidants found in avocado oil have the ability to penetrate into the cells and thus protect them from damages caused by oxidation.
Numerous fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants do not have such ability, at least not the same level of ability. Furthermore, avocado oil has proven to be very powerful weapon in the fight against heart diseases and aging problems.
Macadamia oil – rich source of omega-3
Average westerner consumes significantly greater amounts of omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3, which causes many diseases, often even chronic ones.
But, macadamia oil has exquisitely low omega-6 content and relatively high omega-3 content, which makes this oil one of the healthiest nutty oils for human consumption.
It is also rich in oleic acid, i.e. omega-9 fatty acids that are proven to be very useful in the fight against cancer and protection against heart diseases.
Australian nut oil, due to taste and rich aroma, is a great salad oil. Since it has a high smoking point, this oil is good for frying and stewing.
Olive oil – the king amongst oils
Health benefits of olive oil are widely known.
Due to that, this oil became one of those oils that are most often recommended for consumption, especially if you want to protect your heart’s health.
Authentic, extra virgin olive oil has all the properties given to them by the food industry.
As one of the staple foods in Mediterranean diets, olive oil is rich in mono-saturated fats and high density lipoproteins (HDL) that help lowering cholesterol levels.
Due to various vitamins, nutritive compounds and antioxidants, olive oil efficiently protects against heart diseases. Apart from that, it enhances digestion, protects against ulcers and gastritis and prevents creation of bile stones.
Sesame oil – for cardiovascular system health
Popular in Asian cuisine, sesame oil has a specific taste due to which it has become one of the favorite supplements for numerous dishes.
Furthermore, it is very healthy since scientists have discovered that it lowers blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart diseases.
It is rich in iron, calcium and magnesium and poly-saturated fats that help with regular absorption of fats.
Furthermore, it sharpens the mind, gives strength to teeth and bones and gives a healthy glow to our skin.
It helps fighting diabetes, prevents gum inflammations and plaque creation, protects the kidneys and is great for fighting depression.
Naturally, we did not manage to enlist all healthy oils in this article.
Other oils you should keep an eye on are:
- almond
- pumpkin
- linen
- grape seed oil
- nut
- cannabis oil
- Sacha Inchi oil
- ghee (Ayurvedic clarified butter)
On the other hand, “popular” refined oils such as sunflower, rapeseed, corn, soy, cotton seed oils etc. should be avoided, since they are harmful to our health.
