Our living space mirrors our personality.
How many times have we heard this theory! But how much truth is there?
Think about the joy you feel when redecorating your apartment, choosing colors and furniture with much enthusiasm, changing the appearance of every room, introducing plants and various small details.
How much joy we feel when we find the exact color we wanted, and yet how sad we get when we see that the chair we bought looked different in a furniture showroom than it looks in our home!
Redecoration attempts are spiced with mood swings, from excitement to disappointment. Usually we do not think about our emotions, we just work spontaneously, relying on our instinct.
But why are we overwhelmed with emotions, what are they telling us, why do we feel them so intensely?
Is it not the answer of our space? Is it not telling us that it is happy or unhappy with our arrangements?
Is not this the unconscious interaction and communication between us and our space?
The space is actually trying to tell us that it is alive, that it breathes and wants to be satisfied.
Where is the problem?
The problem is that we designed the space according to our needs and desires, and they did not coincide with the needs of the space.
The result is a feeling of discomfort in this area and our bad mood.
Actually, this is the most important principle of feng shui planning, which many people neglect and therefore do not get the expected results.
Feng shui is the one that teaches us to firstly find out what our space needs, then what we want and to see what proper functioning of space requires.
All of these factors have to be met and the optimal solution should be found. Only then will we have a harmonious and healthy home and be happy and satisfied with it.
How to "nurture" our space
First, we must remember that our world is a complex energy field - a densely woven network. The network is strong when all the threads are in place.
In this world every thread is right where it should be. Everything is located precisely where it should be and is placed there for a reason - to keep a solid network together.
The same goes for our space. Every living space should be a link in the network - it should not be broken, otherwise it becomes a cage.
This way energy enters our space, feeds it and continues its flow. Our space becomes a part of the environment and we can truly say that it becomes alive and that it breathes.
Space analysis
Each space is unique. Space has a date of birth and a name - as every other living creature.
When we build a living space, we close it with a roof - that closes energies from the universe and the earth and then adds human energy to that mixture.
These are extremely important principles that define our space.
Our ancestors knew the importance of this momentum and they celebrated it and marked it depending on the culture in which they lived.
We can still remember the celebration that followed putting a roof on a house - a special event when neighbors brought gifts and expressed good wishes to the host.
So, each space has its own combination of energy that is determined by these characteristics.
Energies from the universe are determined by year of birth of the house, i.e. the period to which that year belongs.
Layout of earth energies depends on the location of the house and the direction from which comes the strongest energy, and we call this facing.
It is often difficult to determine the best facing since modern architects made that task very complicated.
It is easy when the house has a clear face and background - when we have lots of windows and doors on the same side, then that is the side that has the biggest energy impact.
In the modern architecture, it is usually not the case, so we must rely on personal perception, assessment, seeing where the greatest activity is (movement, sound, open view, road, river etc.), then the internal layout and space utilization, and the desire of tenants.
Once this is determined, then we can accurately determine geographic direction via compass. We have to be accurate, since energy changes at every 15 degrees.
Only then can we make a real energy distribution in our area, that famous Bagua map that contains energies of earth and universe.
Bagua map, which is made on the basis of the energetic layout of the space, is a map that guides us in the decoration of our space.
Healing our space
It is important to stress that we first need to heal the areas where there is negative energy.
We can correct space deficiencies with the help of an object which is a typical representative of one of the five elements.
According to the type of negative energy, we add an element that needs to feed it, based on the theory of five elements, thus we deplete negative energy because we use it for feeding our space.
The living area with a positive energy should be arranged by adding elements that support and feed the existing energy. You do not have to correct anything; you just have to be careful not to deplete existing good energies.
The goal is always to achieve "nurturing" relationship - this is the basic principle of the interior design!
When space is balanced, that it is healthy, it is in harmony.
Then it just needs to become connected with the environment, which means that the furniture layout should be planned in a way so it allows the energy to enter, flow through space like a stream and to stay within the space as long as possible before leaving.
This connection with nature is in our instincts, we maintain such connection almost unwittingly by inserting plants in our living spaces, without even asking why we do it.
Everything mentioned above implies how important it is to become aware of our relationship with space, to listen what our space is asking from us and to cooperate with it.
It will then repay us by bringing harmony, which is what Feng shui is all about!
In future articles we will present you with several steps you can apply right away and feel instant results!
