Dr. Broda Barnes, a doctor who was far ahead of his time, found as early as 50 years ago that our body temperature was a good indicator of thyroid activity, especially body temperature immediately after waking up.
He wrote a book on thyroid activity with a description of the various problems and diseases that may occur due to reduced activity of this important organ.
He also developed a simple home test that can be used for checking the status of your thyroid.
Barnes test
Before bedtime, take a thermometer and shake it well - make sure that the temperature on it is lower than 35 degrees C.
The next morning, immediately upon waking, place the thermometer under your armpit. Make sure that there are no clothes between the thermometer and your armpit.
Leave the thermometer for 10 minutes. You can use that time to take a little nap.
After 10 minutes, read the results and immediately write them down. This effect is known as the "early morning basal temperature." Normal temperature is between 36.5 and 36.8.
The temperature may vary due to infectious diseases and in women because of menstruation. It is therefore recommended to make this test if you are healthy and you do not have period.
The test results
- If your temperature is between 36.5 and 36.8, your thyroid gland is working normally.
- If the temperature is below 36.5, then the thyroid performance is reduced. The symptoms of a reduced thyroid function are depression, lack of energy, fatigue, infections, chronic headaches, lack of memory and concentration, hair loss etc.
- If the temperature is higher than 36.8, the thyroid functions are accelerated or you have an infection.
In order to achieve the best accuracy it is recommended to repeat this process three days in a row.
If your temperature is above or below the normal range, we recommend that you contact a conventional or alternative physician to further confirm the diagnosis and get expert advice.
