Coconut oil is one of the few natural products that can be used for so many different applications, not just in the kitchen, but also at work, in the garden or in your garage.

This versatile substance can work wonders in a number of different contexts.

Apart from its numerous health benefits, coconut oil has been praised and popularized as a holy grail of natural products. Its distinct properties make this oil ideal for a wide range of applications.

Therefore, if you are curious to learn what other purposes (apart from cooking and food preparation) this superfood may serve, take a peek at the rest of the article below.

Here are some tips on how to use this versatile ingredient to spring clean your home, to clean and maintain your garden tools, to remove clothing stains or to prepare a natural, non-toxic insect repellent.

Unlike conventional, store-bought cleaning products, coconut oil does not contain harmful substances, nor does it release dangerous chemicals. It is absolutely safe to use on your skin.

When applied to the skin, coconut oil has a moisturizing effect.

Moreover, coconut oil will have a very calming, deeply nourishing and soothing effect on your hands, while you are spring cleaning your home.

Coconut oil for a glistening dishware

You don't need expensive and potentially dangerous chemical cleaning products to polish your dishware.

A few drops of coconut oil will be quite enough to make your dishes sparkling clean and clear.

Place a few drops of coconut oil onto a soft cloth or cotton ball and rinse your bronze and stainless steel dishware.

Do not toss rusty scissors and knives, but slick a few drops of coconut oil on the blades, let it sit for an hour and then rinse with lukewarm water.

Polish your furniture and make it shine with coconut oil

Coconut oil is used as a  natural furniture polisher because it adds shine and prolongs the life of the furniture. This is the easiest and quickest way to get rid of dry woods instantly.

Unlike most wood polish that coats surfaces in a slick layer of synthetic chemicals and makes the wood look sleek and shiny for a little while, coconut oil sinks into the wood and keeps it looking healthy longer. The appearance is much more natural.

Your wooden furniture will simply love the beneficial effects of coconut oil, therefore you should use it to condition all wooden areas in your home, such as tables, chairs, hardwood floors and picture frames.

Coconut oil also acts as an excellent natural leather shiner and cleaner – it may be used to polish your shoes, belts, purses, wallets, recliners... Use a soft, clean cloth and rub a bit of coconut oil onto the surface area.

Coconut oil will offer superior protection from dust, scratches and fingerprints and bring new gloss and smoothness to leather objects and surfaces.

Mix coconut oil with a few drops of lemon juice to prepare an excellent natural furniture polish paste.

Extra virgin coconut oil helps soothe, relieve or prevent many diseases.

Use a clean cloth and gently rub a thin layer of coconut oil onto furniture and other wooden surfaces

To fix a creaky, squeaky door or a stuck door, you may apply several drops of coconut oil to the door hinges and the problem will be solved quickly.

Coconut oil effectively removes irritating stains, stubborn labels and chewing gums

To get rid of those nasty stubborn stains (soap scum, lime scale) from your sink, tiles, bathtub or wash-basin, apply a thin layer of coconut oil to the surface and let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with water (for more stubborn stains you may also mix equal parts of the vinegar and baking soda in rinse water).

Coconut oil can also remove artificial snow and other decorations that remain on the glass after holidays or children's birthday parties.

Apply a thin layer of coconut oil on the glass, let it sit there for a few minutes and then rinse with warm water and a few drops of apple cider vinegar.

The oil will also help eliminate paint stains, wax and glue residues as well as other adhesive materials that are hard to get off your skin.

Rub in coconut oil gently, leave it for a few minutes and then rinse.

To remove furniture or carpet stains, prepare a paste by mixing equal parts of coconut oil and baking soda. Rub the paste on the stain, leave it on for about 5 minutes and then scrub it off with an old toothbrush or scrubby side of a sponge.

The same procedure may be applied to clothing and fabric stains.

Coconut oil works just as effectively in removing chewing gum from hair and other surface areas.

Rub coconut oil over chewing gum stuck in hair, leave for 30 minutes and then roll the gum between your fingertips.

At work, you may use coconut oil to remove sticky label residues.

Cover the label with a film of coconut oil and let it soak in for a few minutes. Then wipe it off. Use a bit of oil on a clean cloth to remove whatever's left.

Coconut oil use in gardens and yards

While being outdoors this spring, visit your garden shed and use the coconut oil to clean off and condition your tools. Get rid of the rust, prevent future rust forming and keep your tools lubricated and in great working order.

Coat your rusty lawnmower, scissors and other blades with a thin layer of coconut oil, leave it for a few minutes, then wipe it off with a cotton cloth.

If the tools are new and well maintained, apply a thin layer of coconut oil to prevent rust from forming and protect them from grass cuttings, branches and leaves.

You may also use coconut oil to clean and disinfect your barbecue grill grate. Clean the grill by applying coconut oil, let it sit for about an hour and then scrub it off with a cloth.

Coconut oil – a natural mosquito repellent

With the spring weather and springtime outdoor activities, there comes a familiar mosquito plaque.

To prevent mosquitoes from laying their eggs, place several spoons of diluted coconut oil into your garden or rainwater bins.

The oil will solidify, thereby creating a thin, greasy layer that will hinder their ability to reproduce.

It may also be used to protect from insect bites. Make your own repellent that will repel other insects as well.

Mix 3 spoons of coconut oil with a few drops of an insect repellent essential oil (peppermint, citronella, rosemary, lemon eucalyptus, clove, tea shrub) and apply on your skin.

Healthy spring cleaning alternative

You may also refer to the recipe that brings general ratios:

  • -3 spoons diluted coconut oil
  • 10 drops citronella
  • 5 drops tea shrub
  • 3 drops peppermint

Mix the ingredients and apply on your skin.

After an insect or a mosquito bite, rub pure coconut oil onto the affected skin.

Being rich in natural ingredients that protect against bacteria, fungi and viruses, coconut oil has a soothing effect on your skin, provides strong disinfectant properties and relieves your itch and skin irritation.

It also stimulates wound healing and alleviates swelling at the site of the sting.

Coconut oil is especially beneficial for children, pregnant women and those patients who are not allowed to use conventional skin care products.
