Chapatis - Indian flat bread made of wholemeal flour - are an important part of Indian cuisine.
In fact, most Indians eat them every day just as we eat bread.
The advantages of chapatis are that they do not contain any yeast and can be made of 100% wholemeal flour.

Ingredients:
- 250 g of wholemeal flour (or a mixture of whomeal and plain flour)
- 150 ml of lukewarm water
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- 3 tablespoons of butter, ghee or olive oil
Preparation:
Mix salt and flour in a large bowl. Slowly add some water and knead the mixture into soft dough.
Move the dough to a flat surface and knead for another 6-8 minutes until it becomes smooth and firm.
Sprinkle it with a little water, cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it stand for 30 minutes.
When the dough is ready, put the pan over a medium fire. Knead the dough again and form it into 12 balls.
Sprinkle a little flour on them and spread them into circles that are approximately 15 cm in diameter. Shake off excess flour from chapati and place it on the heated pan.
When the surface of chapati starts forming white bubbles and edges begin to lift, turn chapati over using tongs and bake the other side.
When bubbles and golden-brown dots start appearing on the other side too, turn chapati over again.
Now, gently press chapati with a spatula or cloth over the entire surface until it blows up like a ball.
Spread butter, ghee or olive oil over chapati. Serve with a meal (soup, rice and vegetables) while still warm.
Chapatis can be filled with fresh or cooked vegetables, grated cheese or any other filling and be served as an independent meal.
