Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways.

The inflammation causes swelling of the bronchi and thus prevents normal breathing.

According to the World Health Organization, 235 million people worldwide suffer from asthma.

The escalation of the disease has been caused by air pollution, sedentary lifestyle, infrequent trips to the nature, processed foods without nutritional value, low immunity and genetic predisposition.

Mild asthma is suppressed by conventional medicine with the use of inhalers, while strong bouts require medical attention.

Conventional medicine believes that asthma is an incurable disease and the affected people must take the medication for the rest of their lives.

However, alternative medicine offers a full range of natural remedies that can alleviate and even completely cure asthma.

One of the ways you can cure asthma naturally is to use essential oils.

It is recommended to use treatment with essential oils between asthma attacks.

In doing so, it is good to use a diffuser which effectively disperses essential oils around the room in which you reside.

1. Lemon (Citrus limonum)

The fruit used for making this essential oil originates from India. It is obtained by squeezing the rind of a mature fruit in a process called cold pressing.

The lemon oil has a greenish-yellow color and the scent is fresh and sharp. The basic ingredient of lemon oil is limonene and it has anti-inflammatory effect.

Scientists from Israel Institute of Technology have shown that inhalation of lemon oil prevents asthma attacks.

In addition, this essential oil is used to relieve the symptoms of flu and fatigue.

Add a few drops of lemon oil in a warm bath or pour them onto the fabric and inhale the scent of essential oil.

2. Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)

Chamomile is also known under the names of blue chamomile, Hungarian chamomile and German chamomile.

It should be distinguished from Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile).

Chamomile oil is dark blue in color and has a sweet smell, like freshly cut grass.

The essential oil is obtained from ordinary chamomile flowers using steam distillation.

Its anti-allergen, anti-spasmodic, antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties have long been known.

To relieve allergies and to prevent asthma attacks you can use this essential oil by dropping a few drops in the bath, diffuser or by adding them to a massage oil.

3. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

Eucalyptus essential oil is obtained by water distillation of fresh or partially dried leaves and young branches obtained from this tree.

The scent of this essential oil is sharp, fresh and very distinctive, while the oil is pale yellow in color.

Analgesic, antibacterial, anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties of this oil combine to prevent bouts of asthma.

Add a few drops of this oil to the inhalation mixture, because it alleviates sneezing, flu and the problems with the respiratory tract.

You will improve breathing by dropping a few drops in a warm bath.

However, be very careful, because the eucalyptus oil is one of the most intense.

Although essential oils generally mix well, eucalyptus oil mixes particularly well with lavender and lemon.

4. Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of fresh or partially dried plant, except the root, just before flowering.

The essential oil has a fresh and strong smell of mint and is pale yellow in color.

Its anesthetic, antiseptic and anti-spasmodic properties place it among the oils which help prevent bouts of asthma the most.

Inhalation of this essential oil helps relax the muscles of the respiratory tract, which is the same that the conventional inhalers do.

You can add a few drops of this oil into a warm bath. It goes especially well with citrus and lavender.

5. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender essential oil is relaxing and calming, with a strong antiseptic properties. It has a fresh and mild fragrance and its appearance is clear, almost translucent.

It successfully prevents and relieves the symptoms of asthma and colds by opening the airways.

You can put a few drops in the bath, or use it in a diffuser.

It is especially effective if you mix it with peppermint essential oil.

6. Niaouli (Melaleuca viridiflora)

Niaouli essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of leaves and young branches of this Australian evergreen tree.

Its scent is sweet and fresh, and its color varies. It may be colorless, and pale yellow or greenish.

Its powerful antiseptic properties have proved to be effective in combating problems such as asthma and bronchitis.

It goes well and complements lavender and mint essential oils.

7. Anise (Pimpinella anisum)

Anise essential oil is obtained by distillation of ripe fruits and seeds of this plant using the water steaming technique.

This oil of pungent and spicy fragrance has superb anti-spasmodic and antiseptic properties and is a constituent of many cough medicines.

The real value of anise is that it strongly degrades mucus in the throat and lungs and promotes expectoration.

It is effective in preventing asthma, colds and other illnesses related to the respiratory tract.

If you have asthma, add a few drops of this oil into a warm bath, but avoid inhaling undiluted essential oil of anise.
