Dangers Hiding in the Synthetic Vitamins

Vitamins are essential nutrients necessary for growth, development and normal functioning of the entire human body.

Each of them has a specific function and the lack thereof can have a negative impact on every, even the smallest organ in our body.

Vitamins are irreplaceable in preserving and strengthening of the immune system, which is of great importance particularly in autumn and the upcoming winter time.

According to some expert evidences, regular intake of vitamins is an excellent way to prevent certain diseases, including the heavier ones, like heart disease and cancer.

But, what is less known and what we shall refer to in this article is the difference between natural and synthetic vitamins.

Natural Vitamins

Fresh organic or domestic fruits and vegetables are certainly the most valuable natural sources of essential ingredients, including vitamins.

If consuming them regularly, there is no need to worry about whether we took enough vitamins and other essential nutrients.

In that case, you generally do not need vitamin supplements.

Did you know that one or two oranges a day ensure the recommended amount of vitamin C and at the same time supply the body with other valuable substances?

When you take effervescent tablet your body will receive a certain amount of vitamin C of questionable quality - and that’s all you will get.

If you eat one orange, your body will get a natural and strong dosage of this valuable vitamin, and at the same time it will receive nutrients such as vitamins A, B1, B9 (folic acid), minerals potassium and calcium and fibers.

Furthermore, along with carotenoids, terpenes and flavonoids, orange contains over 50 anti-cancer substances.

Is it wiser to go to a pharmacy store and pay for vitamin C tablets or to take a walk to the market place and buy a kilo of fresh-grown oranges and enjoy their smell, taste and health?

This example refers to vitamin C, but it is the same with other vitamins if we compare the value of their natural and industrial sources.

Synthetic Vitamins

Today, the market is overflowed with various vitamin supplements.

You can buy them in the form of tablets or capsules artificially produced with the purpose of imitating natural vitamins and their functions.

The main concern is that such supplements are usually unnatural forms of vitamins and their health benefits are very questionable.

In case of synthetic vitamins, we are talking about “isolated” vitamins.

This means that they are not combined with other antioxidants and phytonutrients that control the way in which the body will recognize, and use them – which in fact is the main precondition for total functionality of vitamins.

Artificial vitamins are often manufactured with synthetic chemicals, which is an additional reason to be cautious.

Artificially produced synthetic vitamins are not and cannot be the replacement for natural vitamins!

Harmfulness of Synthetic Vitamins

The truth is that the need for vitamins varies and that certain life circumstances require their increased intake.

For example, the recommended daily dose of vitamins is slightly higher in elderly persons, people with extremely impaired immunity, smokers, pregnant women and nursing mothers, athletes, people who are exposed to severe physical work, etc.

In situations of increased need for vitamins, occasional use of vitamin supplements in the form of pills is not a bad solution.

But in such cases, it is very important to know whether such preparations are natural or synthetic.

Synthetic vitamins are known as laboratory isolated vitamins with modified structure and composition.

Unlike them, natural vitamins are manufactured so that their molecular and biochemical structure is fully preserved.

In the process of their production, chemical additives and other harmful supplements are not used and as such they pose no threat to health.

On the other hand, the hidden dangers of synthetic vitamins are far from being harmless, and their value is not even close to what is presented by their manufacturers.

Moreover, many studies confirm that consummation of these supplements can do more harm than benefit to the body.

One of the most respected nutritionists of the twentieth century, Dr. Royal Lee, had been particularly devoted to researching the welfare of natural food and the harmfulness of industrial food, including nutritional supplements.

After many years of research, he spoke bravely and courageously against industrial corporations:

One of the greatest tragedies of human civilization is giving preference to chemical therapy over nutrition. It means replacing something natural with artificial, providing the body with toxins instead of natural food and feeding people with poison in order to rectify the consequences that resulted from malnutrition and irregular diet.

Certain vitamin supplements are of questionable origin, composition and quality, and as such they present an additional risk to the health.

Their consumption is connected with various diseases, including arthritis, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

According to the study published in New England Journal of Medicine, taking high daily dosages of synthetic vitamin A during pregnancy, highly contributes to the development of malformations in fetus.

Furthermore, according to the research published in Journal of National Cancer Institute, this vitamin is responsible for the development of cancer, particularly lung cancer.

National Institutes of Health warn that excess dosages of synthetic vitamin D can lead to hypercalcemia, (an accumulation of calcium in the blood).

Dr. Maret Traber a professor of nutrition at Linus Pauling Institute claims that there are some indications that increased amounts of synthetic vitamin E might lead to increased bleeding.

Unlike natural vitamins, most synthetic vitamins are far more difficult to absorb by the body and they are quickly eliminated and therefore their efficiency is impaired.

It has been proven that certain synthetic vitamins have a crystal structure, which is undesirable, as they do not disintegrate but deposit in the form of crystals in the body.

Vitamins often cause many side effects such as allergic reactions, stomach problems, eye problems, itching, dryness of skin, etc.

Synthetic vitamins that you should avoid:

  • Vitamin A: acetate and palmitate
  • Vitamin B1: thiamine mononitrate, thiamine hydrochloride
  • Vitamin B2: riboflavin
  • Pantothenic acid: calcium D-pantothenate, sodium D-pantothenate
  • Vitamin B6: pyridoxine hydrochloride
  • Vitamin B12: cobalamin
  • PABA (Para-amino benzoic acid): amino benzoic acid
  • Folic Acid: pteroylglutamic acid
  • Choline: choline chloride, choline bitartrate
  • Biotin: D-biotin
  • Vitamin C: ascorbic acid
  • Vitamin D: radiated ergosterol, calciferol
  • Vitamin E: D-alpha tocopherol, DL-alpha tocopherol, D-alpha tocopherol acetate, DL-alpha tocopherol acetate and D-alpha tocopherol acid succinate
  • Vitamin K: medanion- K3

What can be done?

If at a certain period of your life you need vitamins supplements then act wisely and responsibly.

Choose natural vitamin supplements and note the following:

  • read the product declaration - all ingredients should be listed on the label and that will show you whether the product is based on natural ingredients
  • use different sources of information to find whether the product contains additives or other harmful ingredients are that are usually listed in the label mainly as “other ingredients”
  • If you find the word “natural” written on the label, it does not mean you are safe, because manufacturers are allowed to use the word “natural” if at least 10 % of the product comes from natural resources. Thus, only if the label says “100 % natural”, the product is safe
  • make sure the product has undergone a detailed quality control and is designed to the highest standards
  • explore whether the product has ISO and NSO certificate
  • explore in details the existing studies and researches on the product
