Mountain germander, lat. Teucrium montanum, is a healing herb that grows in mountain areas across the world.
It is known under many names, such as Alpine Pennyroyal, and to an experienced finder it is more precious than gold.
It is recognized by its small bushes with pale-yellow flowers at the top of branches.
Plants are mostly erected and partially woody.
Leaves do not have stem and have hairs on the downside and are green or gray-white in color.
This plant grows in dry, warm and mountainous locations, to heights of 800 meters (2700 feet) and higher, mostly on southern slopes.
Content and healing properties
Mountain germander has been used in healing purpose even in ancient times.
There is an old folk belief on the Balkans that this herb allows mental and physical recuperation after long illnesses, severe physical and mental exhaustion.
Even though it is not widely known among the general population, mountain germander is one of the most trusted healing herbs. It is highly regarded in mountainous areas and some people believe it can cure all diseases.
There is an old saying: “Mountain germander can raise the dead.”
It has a strong bitter and pungent taste and it used for the treatment of many diseases, most diseases related to digestive and respiratory organs, even lung tuberculosis.
It contains bitter substances, tannin, methanol, petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and 1-buthanole.
Due to those ingredients even pharmacists often recommend it for strengthening immune system and it is a great choice for people that are under a lot of stress.
Bitter substances help in the treatment of various stomach diseases and can alleviate bloating.
With its antiseptic effects, this plant destroys pathogenic microorganisms and removes harmful substances from the intestines and stomach.
It is effective for treatment of mouth and throat diseases, various infections, fungi and aphtha.

Picking and preparation
Mountain germander blossoms between June and September and is picked in that period.
If you want to pick this plant properly, use scissors to cut off the leafy flower ends of twigs and dry them quickly on air in order to preserve their color and specific scent.
No matter where you pick mountain germander, leave at least one third of visible flowers intact. Because, apart from having healing properties, this plant is useful for binding those small pieces of earth that can be found in mountainous areas.
Tea preparation
Pour 2 dcl of hot water over a teaspoon of mountain germander and put a lid on the glass. Leave it for 15 minutes and filtrate the mixture. Drink the tea once or twice a day before meal.
Tincture preparation
Soak 20 g of mountain germander in 1 dcl of alcohol. Leave it for two weeks. Drink 20 drops of the tincture three times a day.
Powder
Mince dried mountain germander in coffee grinder. Take one to three grams before meals.
