The story of the Little Eco Seedbank started more than 10 years ago when Robert Martinovic and Petra Radosavljevic decided to plant their first garden.
They asked around to see who had old seeds of preserved untreated varieties of vegetables, flowers and trees which were picked and planted by our great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers.
Some gave them white and golden corn, others gave them fennel and there were those who had kept their grandmother’s vintage flower seeds, so Robert and Petra soon had their wish fulfilled.
But some seeds were left over, so they shared them with others so they would not perish and so that more people could enjoy the magic of nature that so delights them.
The following season - their seeds came back!
People of good will planted numerous species from their seeds and returned part of the new seeds as a token of appreciation.
This created the idea and desire for as many people as possible who love nature and want to plant something to get that precious opportunity.
When they shared their idea on Facebook three years ago, it turned out that thousands of people in Croatia were delighted with it.
Soon a network of gardeners was created who not only share and exchange their eco seeds, but also provide advice, recommendations and share their experiences.
You can join them, too, today.
Me to you, you to someone else
“This is all a hobby for us, one which we truly enjoy and with which we want to help others” , says cheerfully Petra Radosavljevic, otherwise employed as a web designer, a soon-to-be mother who dedicates every free moment in the garden she enjoys.
“We started with several types of seeds, and today we have hundreds of them, thanks to donations from good people who are taking part in the sharing and respect the rules of our business”, she explains. And it's simple: if you can, give back some of what you get and take part in the exchange.
It all comes down to trust and solidarity.
Small Eco Seedbank offers everyone that possibility for only 10 kunas, which is the cost of a postage stamp, and for that price you get a "starter kit" of five different types of eco-seeds.
“The package arrives at your home address within five days. We base it on trust. We share only ecological seeds, untreated ones. But do not check it in laboratories. It may occur that someone sends us other seed types. We only expect people to be honest, nothing more, because we are like that,” says Petra openly.
As for the seeds of fruits and vegetables, herbs and other species used for food, they should be ecological, and at no stage of cultivation should they be treated with chemicals.
With flowers, she says, if a “fake” seed creeps in, the damage will not be as great as when the treated food ends up on your plate.
Tips, ideas, experiences
“Some do not know what to plant, how to and where to put certain plants. Then they get advice that starts with the basics - for example, garlic, Swiss chard, tomatoes, leeks and spinach. We're here to offer advice, recommendations, to answer each question. Some people say: I do not have garden, no yard, where can I plant basil or tomato? I say, do you have a balcony? If you do not have one, you probably have a window!”
“Oh, and there you can grow a mini garden there, you'll see”, Petra says pleasantly.
In addition to having a few hundred seeds of fruits, vegetables, medicinal and ornamental plants and trees, you can find helpful tips on Small Eco Seedbank’s web page.
Regardless of whether you are a beginner or active, professional gardener, or if you are interested in ordinary or exotic species, everyone will find content for themselves on Small Eco Seedbank’s page.
What is a garden and what does the moon have to do with planting a garden, how to grow irises, daisies, and oleander seeds, St. John's wort, a palm tree or dates, what you can make with edible flowers and everything you need for your Healing Circle - these are just some of the information that is available on the website.
A love of nature is above earnings
"Our wish is that as many people turn to nature as possible, that they use every piece of land that they have, even if all they have is a flower bed”, says Petra about her and Robert’s motivation for their commendable initiative.
Petra and Robbie certainly won’t get rich off of sharing and exchanging seeds.
Ten kunas, a roll with five (they always give more) seeds, a price that barely covers the postage stamp.
“We look forward to someone paying more, but we did not open the Little Eco Seedbank for money. What is essential is a good will and love, not earnings”, Petra enthusiastically says.
Earnings are almost nonexistent, but a whole community of nature lovers was launched and offers them support.
Petra and Robert, both modest, are thankful for the nice words about them that have spread on social networks.
“We are not professionals, we always emphasize. We are amateurs, hobbyists. But we always learn something, study, leaf through literature, and search the Internet. If we do not know something, we forward it to others, who will know more”, says Petra, who is motivated by the fact that they are followed by more than 13,000 people every day.
