Many people assume that a deodorant and an antiperspirant are the same thing.
You might be surprised to learn that this is not the case. Antiperspirants contain chemicals that clog pores and thereby prevent sweating.
On the other hand, deodorants allow perspiration, but inhibit perspiration odor.
Many people think (and advertisements promote that belief) that if you do not use an antiperspirant, you will offend the people around you.
Even when you use a deodorant which prevents the odour of sweat, you might feel uncomfortable because you still sweat or think the odours of sweat and the deodorant mix.
Despite this common opinion, most deodorants not only conceal the smell of sweat, but destroy the bacteria that cause the odor because of their antiseptic additives.
Negative consequences for health
Antiperspirants and deodorants both can have serious consequences for health.
Many experts in the medical field believe that the clogging of pores and prevention of sweating is not healthy, because sweating is a natural way of cooling our bodies.
More than that, it is assumed that chemicals contained in antiperspirants (one example of such chemicals is aluminum) can cause cancer and other serious illnesses.
Some studies have shown an association between the regular use of antiperspirants and breast cancer. The risk is even greater if you use an antiperspirant right after shaving your armpits.
Other studies have shown that after being absorbed through the skin, the aluminum enters the bloodstream and then accumulates in the brain. Scientists have linked this phenomenon with an increase in Alzheimer's disease.
Previously, antiperspirants were thought to be much safer than deodorants.
But recent studies have confirmed the connection between parabens, contained in many deodorants, with breast cancer
Autopsies on the bodies of women who died from breast cancer discovered parabens in the breast tissue. This is enough to cause your concern.
What to use instead of antiperspirants
Experts recommend the use of deodorants without parabens instead of using antiperspirants (carefully read the label).
Many people have started to use natural deodorants, which can be purchased in health food stores and cosmetics or in our Alternativa Webshop.
Make deodorant at home
Some people have even started making deodorants at home.
Here is a recipe for such a deodorant:
Mix equal amounts of baking soda and cornstarch. Add a few drops of essential oil.
Apply this mixture under the arm with a damp cloth. This homemade deodorant is easy to wash and is much healthier than commercial deodorants!
