If we give the green light to some scientists, our streets will soon be filled with people with bulletproof skin made from spiderweb protein and goat milk with the help of biological engineering.
Bulletproof vests are commonly used as a protection against bullets, but so far bulletproof skin could only be seen in cartoons.
To imagine something like that in reality is absurd and disgusting, but thanks to a group of English scientists, it may soon be possible.
Scientists in the Forensic Genomics Consortium in the Netherlands have genetically created goats which provide milk with a protein from a spider's web. That milk is then used for making material that is 10 times harder than steel.
Scientists are trying to infiltrate this material with human skin cells, to make a thin and flexible bulletproof vest.
Bullet proof skin
But the story does not end there. "Why only vest?" - said the English scientists. - "We can give people a lot better, tighter skin!"
Jalila Essaidi, the project manager, explains that their ultimate goal is to replace keratin from human skin with protein from spider webs with the help of bioengineering.
They are currently trying to grow a layer of real human skin around a sample of the bulletproof material, made from goat's milk and spider webs.
Integration with the human skin is possible thanks to adding spider genes in the human genome. This experiment, they say, will take about 5 weeks, and its result is people resistant to bullets!
Experiments on humans and animals are becoming more common
Recently, 150 hybrids of humans and animals have been created in laboratories in England, and with the full support of the government.
Scientists say, such experiments could help find a cure for many incurable diseases.
English magazine Daily Mail expressed concern over these experiments, which could go too far. Genetically produced hybrids could escape from the lab and begin to proliferate, and our planet could turn into a real "Planet of the Apes."
This sounds like science fiction, but such experiments are disgusting reality and scientists started using them more often. In the last 3 years in the UK several such experiments were conducted.
Experiments involve impregnation of animal eggs with human sperm cybrids (animal cells that are injected into the nuclei of human cells) and chimeras (created by the combination of human and animal cells).
The big question is why scientists consider it is reasonable and acceptable to use parts of humans and animals for creating monsters in laboratories?
