Willowherb is a genus of plants mentioned since the antiquity on all continents, cultures and languages as the best remedy for prostate.

There are many species of willowherb and they all belong to the genus of Epilobium.

It is a widespread plant which from July to September and which likes fresh nutritious nitrogen-rich soils.

It is recognizable by small flowers whose colour varies from almost white to pale pink to pint and red.

It mostly grows in coniferous and deciduous forests, on forest clearings and between pines by forest paths.

It was forgotten for a while until it was repopularized in the 20th century by a renowned herbalist Maria Treben. Today willowherb is again being talked about as a unique remedy for male ailments.

Numerous healing species of willowherb

There are numerous willowherb species. One has to recognize those with healing effects, that is, those that are the most recommended.

This is the list of the healing species of willowherb, which you may find useful in order to chose the best.

  • pale willowherb (Epilobium roseum)
  • small-flowered willowherb (Epilobium parviflorum)
  • broad-leaved willowherb (Epilobium montanum)
  • dwarf willowherb (Epilobium obscurum)
  • spear-leaved willowherb (Epilobium lanceolatum)
  • hill willowherb (Epilobium collinum)
  • marsh willowherb (Epilobium palustre)
  • alpine willowherb (Epilobium fleischeri)
  • pimpernel willowherb (Epilobium anagallidifolium)

Composition and healing properties

Maria Treben wrote about willowherb:

“Many sick patients may recover with help of willowherb, often to the point of not having to undergo surgery. If the surgery has already been performed, willowherb tea eliminates tingling and other ailments that frequently appear after surgery.”

All the things that she wrote still apply today, as willowherb is considered the most effective herb used to treat prostate diseases.

Maria Treben used it to treat the inflammation of prostate and urinary bladder.

Natural antiseptic, antibacterial, adstringent, antiinflammatory and anticancer

Willowherb has proven effective with difficulties urinating related to enlarged prostate and with blood in urin.

This is a herb used in folk medicine against kidney ailments and pains as well as in severe conditions such as bladder and prostate cancer.

It is successfully used for treating incontinence in men and in women.

It is extremely effective in the treatment of various kidney diseases (bacterial and other infections, inflammations, tumours) and against tough bacteria (in the bladder and the urinary duct).

Willowherb contains flavonoids, quercetin, miricetin, sitosterol, vitamin C and carotene.

A 2003 study, which covered various species of willowherb, proved that the polyphenols from willowherb reduce the spreading of prostate cells thus helping with benign hyperplasia of the prostate.

A 2013 study, which included the species Epilobium angustifolium, Epilobium parviflorum and Epilobium hirsutum, found that these species contain potent compounds which stop the growth of prostate cancer cells.

The study concluded that willowherb is a strong natural remedy for prostate diseases.

Willowherb causes no side effects, unlike conventional drugs like tamsulosin and finasteride, which may cause irregular heartbeat, digestive problems, headache and chronic fatigue.

Other medicinal uses

Naturopaths claim that willowherb helps with rectal bleeding and menstrual disorders.

It has a beneficial effect on digestion so it can treat diarrhea and the irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Willowherb powder is used to control internal bleeding.

It can be used to make an ointment helping to treat children's skin problems.

The species Epilobium angustifolia is sometimes added to cosmetic products against acne, shampoos and facial tonics.

Therapeutical products for eczemas, rosacea and other skin conditions frequently contain willowherb.
