Will probiotics replace antidepressants in the future?

Recent research confirms: probiotics reduce depression and anxiety

Forget Prozac and other antidepressants, take probiotics and discover a new, brighter side of life.

Apart from protecting digestion and strengthening immunity, probiotics help the organism against depression, anxiety and fear.

This has been shown by the research carried out by the scientists at the Toronto University on 40 patients suffering from chronic fatigue.

The patients took probiotics for two months discovering that not only their digestion had improved but that their symptoms of depression and anxiety with which they struggled for years had subsided.

The control group, which was given placebo, did not experience change compared to their initial state.


Good bacteria improve mood


A. Venket Rao, lead author, said his team was surprised by the results, notably by the way he probiotics affected the symptoms of neurological disorders.

"We are excited because we really obtained positive results. The probiotics showed a powerful effect on neuropsychological disorders like depression and anxiety", said. A. Venket Rao.

The researchers were additionally delighted by learning the probiotics are a healthier and safer alternative to antidepressants and other conventional drugs.

"Probiotics may be a safe and cheap solution for many neurological disorders and are free from harmful and dangerous side effects", A. Venket Rao.

Another scientist taking part in the research, dr. Alison C. Bested, explained that the probiotics act as a natural digestion stimulator, expelling harmful bacteria and toxins from the organism.

Bifidobacteria, says dr. Bested, raise the levels of L-tryptophan - an essential amino acid that is converted into the "happy hormone" serotonin in the organism.

"These results are very important. Probiotics improved digestion, alleviated flatulence and gas, but they also showed another effect, that we found surprising", added dr. Bested.

Good bacteria, consumed with probiotics, succeeded in reducing the patients' tension, fear and apathy.

While taking probiotics, all the patients felt better and more contented. Not one complained about, for instance, the irregular heartbeat (which is usually accompanied by anxiety). Many slept better and coped more calmly with their illnesses.

The secret of these results lies in Lactobacillus casei and Bifidus bacteria strains, which reach the brain helping it solve problems related to behavior and emotions.

That is why the researchers believe that ordinary probiotics, instead of harmful and dangerous antidepressants, may play the significant role not only in treatment but also in prevention of depression and many other illnesses.


How to take probiotics


You can take probiotics through food (notably fermented products) but you may also buy them as powder or in capsules.
