Gerson method is a comprehensive approach to healing the body using a special diet and detoxification.
This method improves the body's natural ability of self-healing.
Gerson method is now one of the most popular natural therapies for cancer treatment in the world.
However, it also helps with many other diseases, such as epilepsy, drug addiction, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, heart and kidney diseases.
If implemented preventively, this method can prevent many diseases and maintain good health.
Discovery of therapy
This particular dietary regime was developed in 1920’s by Max Gerson, a German physician, born in 1881, today’s Poland.
Because he suffered from migraine whose symptoms worsened and contemporary medicine could not help him, he persisted with the intention that he will find a cure for his ailments.
By exploring the available literature and experimenting on himself, he discovered that a vegetarian diet without salt removes severe headaches and nausea.
Recommending this type of diet and his patients he accidentally discovered that identical food and meal preparations also treat lupus and tuberculosis for which there was no cure in those times.
Success in the treatment of tuberculosis was confirmed by the clinical trial and the Gerson Therapy became known throughout Europe.
His results brought his some famous patients, such as the family of Doctor Albert Schweitzer, Nobel laureate, who was cured of diabetes, and his wife from tuberculosis.
Although his diet was mainly prescribed to people suffering from tuberculosis, it turned out that at the same time his diet successfully treats allergies, asthma, and blood pressure disorder.
Gerson realized that his diet does not cure a specific disease, but rather stimulates the metabolism and the immune system to work properly and to restore health by doing so.
How to perform this diet
Gerson divides foods into three groups - desirable, occasionally allowed and prohibited.
Gerson diet is quite restrictive. It mostly consists of raw and almost completely vegetarian food.
Fruits and vegetables are preferable in large quantities.
You can eat oranges, lemons, apples, pears, peaches, plums and cherries, and carrots, tomatoes, peppers, green beans, Swiss chard, lettuce, kale, broccoli and red cabbage. Occasionally you may eat half a banana.
Fresh fruits and vegetables are eaten raw, in salads, juices and soups.
From non-vegan products, only yogurt and honey are allowed. Milk and dairy products, as well as meat, are prohibited.
Occasionally you may eat whole grain rice and some integral ray or oat bread. Boiled potatoes are allowed on the menu more frequently.
When it comes to oil, only linseed oil is allowed.
For sweetening you can use maple syrup, honey or brown sugar in an amount that does not exceed two teaspoons a day.
Patients do not drink water, juices are instead recommended. You can drink as much as 13 glasses of juice during the day.
Persons who wish to implement the Gerson diet must completely remove salt from their diet because, according to Dr. Gerson, the penetration of sodium into the cells causes many diseases.
It is necessary to avoid all processed foods, including all frozen and canned foods, smoked and, of course, salted foods.
Alcohol, coffee and all teas are prohibited.
You are also not allowed to eat legumes, soybeans, mushrooms and margarine.
When it comes to fruit and vegetables, you are not allowed to eat pineapples, avocados, berries, coconut and other nuts and cucumber, sprouts and raw spinach.
Juice therapy
During the 50’s Gerson has perfected his program specifically for patients suffering from cancer.
He introduced the consumption of fruit and vegetables, preferably organic.
Juices are consumed during the day, every hour, always freshly prepared.
Gerson recommended four basic types of juices: carrot, apple with carrot, orange and green juice (made from cabbage and other vegetables).
You should drink 13 glasses of juice a day.
With juices, three light meals a day are mandatory, each of which contains a special Hippocratic soup that has a strong detoxifying properties.
For breakfast you can eat oatmeal with added fruits, and for lunch and dinner, potatoes and salad.
Everything is cooked on mild fire with less water. It is forbidden to use aluminum cookware and it is recommended to use only silver cutlery.
The recipe for Hippocratic soup
- 1 medium celery root
- 1 medium parsley root
- 2 small or one large leek
- 2 medium-sized ports
- garlic as desired (it can be added at the end)
- a bit of parsley leaves
- 600 g of tomatoes
- 400 g of potatoes
Wash vegetables, grate it or cut it into cubes.
Put in a large pot; add a little water – just enough to cover the vegetables.
Heat until it boils, and then cook it slowly on mild fire for an hour and a half to two, until vegetables become tender.
At the end, mash vegetables.
Cleansing the body with coffee enemas
According to Gerson, it is necessary to do an enema coffee, four times a day, and even more times in the case of large tumors.
Gerson found that enemas are the best for cleansing the liver and for eliminating toxins from the body.
You have to prepare 900 ml of freshly made coffee for one enema dose. Occasionally, you can also use castor oil for this purpose.
During the implementation of the enema, it is necessary to stop using all chemical cosmetic products that come into the contact with the skin or mucosa.
Diet supplements
Dr. Gerson was a supporter of natural supplements.
Apart from special and diet and enemas, he also prescribed potassium and iodine in the form of Lugol solution to his patients.
He recommended vitamin C, B3 and B12, and digestive enzymes.
Today his therapy also contains other compounds, such as vitamin B17, coenzyme Q10 and colostrum.
Calcium intake is considered harmful.
No collegial support
After he emigrated to the US in the 1930’s., Gerson focused his research on the prevention and treatment of cancer.
Unfortunately, he did not get support from his colleagues or medicinal scientists.
After his death, his daughter Charlotte Gerson continued her father's longstanding work and in 1977 she founded the Gerson Institute.
Currently, there are two authorized centers in the world in which patients are treated according to Gerson’s teaching, in Mexico and in Hungary, near Budapest.
You can learn more about Max Gerson and his method in the movies “The Gerson Miracle” and “The Beautiful Truth”.
